Latin embroidery with a modern twist
The Heritage and History Initiative continues with a new bus wrap for Hispanic Heritage Month, created by local artist Yasmeen Gonzalez. Her design incorporates Latin embroidery with a modern twist, depicting daily life in the Salem community through a vibrant, pixelated style.
Gonzalez explained, "It appears that more young Mexican Americans have been embracing their culture unapologetically, which is a huge contrast from when I was in school wishing I was more like my white peers. I want to celebrate this by embracing my beautiful culture and its textile work as I depict the story of Latinxs unapologetically having fun in this Latin environment."
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, is a dedicated time to recognize and honor the profound impact that Hispanic and Latiné communities have had on our nation. This month is not only about acknowledging the historical contributions, but also about celebrating the rich diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions that these communities bring. The timing of the celebration is significant, beginning on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries.
By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we highlight the vibrant role Hispanic and Latino cultures play in shaping our local and national identity, as well as our future.
